How the Processes Work
- Puff Screen Printing: A foaming additive (typically 10% – 20% by weight) is mixed into plastisol or water-based inks. When the garment goes through a conveyor dryer, the heat activates the foaming agent, causing the ink to expand upward.
- Puff Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV): Crafters use specialty 3D vinyl. After cutting and weeding your design, you press it onto the shirt using a heat press (around 265° F to 310° F), which causes the flat vinyl to puff and inflate.
Best Practices & Tips
- Design for Puff: Puff ink looks best on bold, thick lines and shapes. Fine details or tiny text will often lose their definition or become unreadable when the ink expands.
- Avoid Layering: Puff HTV is generally thicker and can’t be successfully layered on top of itself or other heavy vinyls.
